Sunbright Farm is located on 120 acres in Macon County, AL.  It was once part of a cotton farm with a share cropper cabin still located on the farm.  Since then it was used for cattle and hay.  It has been in organic fruit and vegetable production since 2003.  The soil is sandy loam, very nice and easy to work, but low in organic matter and nutrients, and it tends to crust if left bare.  The management goals of Sunbright Farm include:

1.     Improve soil fertility by increasing the soil organic matter content and nurture the soil food web.  This is done by keeping the soil covered at all times with cover crops, mulch, or cash crops, or even weeds.

2.   Manage weeds with cover crops, crop rotations, mulch, shallow tillage, and hand weeding.

3.    Manage pests with healthy soil, healthy plants, optimum growing conditions, resistant varieties, attracting beneficial insects with farmscaping plants, hand picking, and sanitation.

4.    Achieve ecological balance as far as possible in a productive food system by working with nature instead of against it.

In addition to providing fresh, healthy food, Sunbright Farm is working to develop site specific, ecologically based organic food production techniques, educate others in these techniques, and provide healthy fresh food for those in the community who are not able to produce their own.
